What is Small Business Rates Relief

Small Business Rates Relief (SBBR) is a government scheme in England that can eliminate or partially reduce your business rates bill.

It is based on Rateable Value which is not the same as your rent. It is an estimate of the property’s rental value, set by the the Valuation Office Agency (VOA).

You can check the rateable value of your commercial property using the GOV.UK lookup tool.

Relief Overview

  • If the Rateable Value of your property is £12,000 or less you recieve 100% relief meaning you dont pay any business rates.
  • If your Rateable Value is between £12,001 and £15,000 you recieve tapered relief (if RV is £13,500 you will recieve 50% relief).
  • If your Rateable Value is £15,000 or more you receive no relief.

Small Business Rates Relief Calculation

  1. Find the rateable value and work out what relief you will recieve.
  2. Multiply the rateable value by the small business multiplier (43.2p for properties with an RV under £51,000) to find your business rates.
  3. Take off the relief from your business rates to find your annual business rates bill.
